Real estate agents live by the motto, “Location, location, location.” Today, we’re giving communication professionals a motto of our own: “Audience, audience, audience.”
As you create a communication plan, ask yourself these questions:
- Who is our audience? Decide which groups of people you most want to reach with your message, and target those groups.
- What key messages do we want our audience to hear? Even when marketing the same product or promoting the same event, two different audiences may want or need to hear different messages.
- What is the best way to reach our audience? Maybe your audience should be targeted through the news media or a blog. Maybe you can reach them directly through an e-newsletter or on Twitter.
- What will get the audience’s attention? No matter what your content, make it clear how your message is of interest to your audience. It’s not about you – it’s about them.
Just like buying the beautiful condo that’s right next to the hog fat rendering plant, filling the air with its aroma, can you imagine sending a release about the new Grand Theft Auto video game to American Bee Journal magazine?
Remember: audience, audience, audience.
